Thailand Breaks Into Global Top 50 Startup Ecosystems, Emerges ASEAN’s Leading MedTech Hub: Thailand has entered the world’s Top 50 startup ecosystems for the first time in six years, ranking 49th globally in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2026 compiled by StartupBlink. The country also emerged as Southeast Asia’s leading hub for MedTech startups, highlighting its growing influence in innovation and technology-driven industries.

According to the National Innovation Agency (NIA), Thailand recorded a strong 62.6 per cent growth in its startup ecosystem, reflecting rising investor confidence and the rapid expansion of innovation ecosystems across the country.

The index evaluated startup ecosystems in 120 countries and more than 1,500 cities worldwide. Thailand ranked fourth in Southeast Asia, behind Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Officials said startups are increasingly being viewed as a major engine for economic growth, digital transformation, high-skilled employment and global competitiveness.

Bangkok remained Thailand’s leading startup city, climbing to 76th globally and fourth in Southeast Asia. The capital also ranked as ASEAN’s top city for robotics startups and 17th worldwide in the robotics category, reflecting strong infrastructure, investment networks and technology communities.

Thailand secured the No. 1 position in Southeast Asia for MedTech startups and ranked eighth globally in the category, underscoring the country’s growing capabilities in healthcare innovation, medical technologies and the wellness economy.

Thailand’s startup ecosystem is also expanding beyond the capital. Chiang Mai and Phuket recorded significant ecosystem growth, while additional cities including Pattaya, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani and Nakhon Pathom were added to the rankings as emerging startup destinations.

With the addition of more ranked cities, Thailand now has the third-highest number of startup cities in Southeast Asia, signaling the broader spread of innovation activity into regional economies.

Thailand also ranked second in the Asia-Pacific region for Startup Community Activity, highlighting the growing strength of entrepreneur networks, innovation events and startup ecosystems nationwide.

Authorities said the latest rankings reflect structural improvements in Thailand’s innovation ecosystem, including stronger collaboration between entrepreneurs, investors, universities and support organizations.

The Thai government is accelerating several initiatives to strengthen innovation-led growth, including area-based innovation ecosystems, university-linked startup programmes, makerspaces, matching funds and more systematic intellectual property management.

The country is particularly focused on developing DeepTech startups in sectors such as MedTech, artificial intelligence, robotics, climate technology and FoodTech, while also expanding research commercialization and high-skilled workforce development.

Plans are also underway to further develop the Ari Innovation District as a central hub connecting startups with funding, technology and international innovation networks, supporting Thailand’s ambition to become a global Startup Nation.
